This is what they tell us about an interesting Berkeley University’s Course of Science Based Happiness: ”We all want to be happy, and there are countless ideas about what happiness is and how we can get some. But not many of those ideas are based on science. That’s where this course comes in…The Science of Happiness is the first MOOC to teach the ground-breaking science of positive psychology, which explores the roots of a happy and meaningful life. Students will engage with some of the most provocative and practical lessons from this science, discovering how cutting-edge research can be applied to their own lives… Students will learn about the cross-disciplinary research supporting this view, spanning the fields of psychology, neuroscience, evolutionary biology, and beyond.”
I am really glad these kind of integrative and brilliant courses are available. There seems to be really world-renowned experts in the course, discussing themes like empathy, mindfulness, and gratitude—experts including Barbara Fredrickson, Paul Ekman, Sonja Lyubomirsky, and Jon Kabat-Zinn. And it is FREE! Wow.
There is just one thing which bothers me. We don’t need just happiness based science in our time. What we actually need is common sense, love and happiness based science. It looks sadly that science has become a new religion of our time. It seems to override the person’s trust to her/his own spiritual, ethical and body wisdom. Very highly educated people have lost their common sense and trust to their body, personal feelings and emotions.
For me ethics comes before science. Love and caring comes before science. The science is not the first principle. The people, who are happily and with love connected to their own bodies, communities and natural surroundings, can make happiness based science. The science has been used so many times in unethical projects. The first one always to be emphasized should be happiness based science and not just science based happiness. The human life is not a scientifical project: it is a creative individual journey. We gain happiness through love.
Unfortunately the fact is that the science has become a religion of our time. That IS a big problem. I suspect that all these experts agree with me about the subject. If they do, I express my humble wish that they would underline this: We need more and more happiness based science!
